The Backroad Challenge wouldn't exist without an army of dedicated volunteers.
We use volunteers in a unique way at the Backroad Challenge. We first split our event up in to several areas of responsibility. Examples would be handling parking, a rest station, post-event cleanup, bussing tables at the Festival, etc. We then ask local non-profit groups to apply for those functions. The chosen groups then assemble their team of volunteers and handle that function on the day of the event.
The Backroad Challenge then shares a portion of the proceeds with these groups as a way of saying thanks, and as an opportunity to support the community. As a non-profit foundation, it's our intent to give the money away anyway, so what better than to donate to our local non-profit groups that help us with our Ride and who also do so much to enhance our community.
We find that the delegation of these functions to our non-profit friends makes for a better overall rider experience, and allows us to continue to grow the event. The strategy was so successful last year that we have decided to continue working with local non-profits again this year and into the future in order to make the Backroad Challenge better each year.
